Note: The three boats marked thus * have been very successful especially the two last, on board of which are the two Dunstan brothers. They sailed on the 27th landed their cargoes and were back to Roscoff on the 31st. a tobacco voyage will now take place; Mallabay is conducting the preparations with the greatest secrecy, and is trying to get authorised by the customs to load in the roads of the Isle of Bas.

The two Dunstans above mentioned belonged to a celebrated smuggling family.

1823 October the Hopewell luggar of 80 tons. Sailed from Flushing (Holland) with 1,200 five gallon casks (half ankers) of brandy and geneve intended to be run to Truro in Cornwall for a person called Sleeman

The following information was provided by Walter & June BADGE of Port Macquarie,  Australia. Walter is a descendent of Richard.

"The cutter "Speedwell"  owned by Richard BADGE (a farmer) b. 14.11.1785 Tresco and his wife Ann nee JENKIN b.1799, married. 29.3.1814 Scilly Isles, Cornwall,  was seized on 5th March 1830 by Custom & Revenue Officers for smuggling Brandy. The vessel was broken up on the beach at Tresco as Punishment and burnt.

"Speedwell" one of many of this name, was registered at Tresco in 1815."
