Here is a photo of another Coast guard. This is Jim Trace and it was sent in by Ian Griffin of Toronto Canada.

Ian says that James TRACE was one of my Great Grandfathers)  - Born: 09 Jul 1848, at 2 Marlborough Row in the sub-district of Morice, Devonport, UK the  son of John TRACE, a labourer, and his wife Jane (formerly WILLIAMS).
On the  22 Aug 1869, he married  Maria CLUTTERBUCK (1848-1932), in the Parish Church of Stoke Damerel, Devon.
The entry for his marriage in the parish register gives  his profession as 'mariner'; this likely indicates that he was already in  the RN at the time of his marriage.

Their first child was born in Aug 1875: A child was born at Devonport; and after this date the next few children were born in Ireland. So he may have transferred  to the coastguard sometime after Aug 1875.

A family bible records the dates of birth for his children during postings to the following CG stations: Ireland 1876-1885: - Sheephaven, Dunfanaghy, Co. Donegal, 1876  - Downings Bay, Ireland 1880.
- Bormoney, Co. Mayo, 1883. - Rosmony, Westport, Co. Mayo, 1885.

In  1835 he returned with his family to the mainland and served in England from 1885 to around 1913:
   - Branscombe, Devon, in 1885.  - Porthleven, Cornwall before 1891 and this appears to be his final posting, where he and his family appear in the 1891 Census for Porthleven. James TRACE and some of his  family are shown living at the CG Station there; James is shown as Head of the family, age 42, and he is classified as Chief Boatman, H.M.Coast Guard. He probably retired in about 1903, after which time he moved to live at Breage, until his death in 1927; he and his wife are buried in the parish cemetery in that village. James was apparently a successful gardener, judging from the size of the  cabbages and broccoli in his garden at Breage, as shown in the photo of him in his retirement, taken about 1925.
