The Morning Chronicle (London, England), Wednesday, November 14, 1804

A melancholy accident happened at Port Just Cove, in the parish of St
Just in Penwith, Cornwall, on Sunday the 4th instant, by the upsetting
of a boat that was coming from a smuggling lugger, lying off the Cove,
in which there were eight men; when the boat came within twenty yards of
the shore, a heavy surf overtook and completely overturned her, and
three only out of the eight were saved. The unfortunate sufferers were
chiefly young men belonging to the lugger, and inhabitants of Polperro.
In the course of the day three bodies were washed ashore, and on Monday
an Inquest was taken by Mr. ROGERS, the Coroner, on their bodies, and
verdicts of Accidental Death were of course returned. The names of the
three men who were picked up were, Thomas HICKS, an innkeeper, of St
Just, about 27 years of age, who carried out with him bank and other
bills to the amount of nearly 100l. and when he was taken up, 90l. were
found and preserved; Richard TOMS a young man of 19, belonging to
Polperro; and also Richard RICHARDS, of the same place, who, it is
hoped, has left only a widow to lament his untimely end.

On Friday evening, last Mr John Bennett, riding officer of HM Customs,
stationed at Mullion, near Penzance, was found lying in the road near
Porthleaven in an insensible state, supposed to have fallen from his
horse in a fit. He was immediately taken to that place, where every
possible assistance was given him. He lived until the next morning, but
never spoke after the accident. He has left a widow and 14 children to
lament his loss, seven of whom are under eleven years of age, and
totally unprovided for.
